Adventurer Ross Edgley, and author of Sunday Times number one bestseller ‘The Worlds Fittest Book’ is aiming to become the first man to swim around Great Britain. He will start on 1st June - swimming 3,200km over 100 days, never touching land, fuelled by 1 million calories! It is the equivalent of swimming the English Channel every day. He will only stop to sleep twice a day (bi-phasic sleep) on his support boat, from which he will also plot his route each day.
Ross has previously rope climbed the height of Mount Everest, swam the Caribbean while dragging a 100lb tree, and did a marathon while pulling a Mini.
The Great British Swim will be filmed by Red Bull, who will be producing weekly vlogs on their YouTube channel with 100% honesty and transparency as the body breaks down during 100 days at sea under chronic fatigue. News of this challenge has sparked a ‘does muscle mass hinder endurance' debate, and it has been said by many open water swimmers that his skin will eventually reject being in salt water for such a long time, so it will be interesting to see how this challenge unfolds.
Ross will have a collection of HUUB wetsuits tailored for estimated weight loss, ranging from his current size to a few stone lighter. HUUB will reveal all the details next week, in a feature discussing his choices for this challenge and the customisation made to cater for this first of a kind adventure.
Talking about the challenge being a massive team effort and not just about one man swimming around an island, Ross commented, “It is also a vehicle to create awareness for the RNLI ‘Respect the Water’ campaign and a way of collecting scientific data to tell us more about the state and health of our oceans. Ross and the support team hope to collect sea samples all around the coast to monitor our oceans.
Talking about his challenge, Ross said, "I want to inspire people to get out there and challenge themselves - maybe try your first open water swim, sign up for a triathlon, or your first park run - find something that you didn’t think you were capable of and prove yourself wrong."
