More than 1,000 primary school pupils from schools across Derby and Derbyshire will be joining triathlon stars Alistair and Jonny Brownlee for a free mini-triathlon event at Allestree Woodlands School on Thursday September 28.
Primary schools have been invited to bring up to 30 pupils from Key Stage 2 (aged 7 – 11) to the triathlon taster where they will complete a 20m swim in Woodlands’ pool followed by an 800m cycle and 300m run around the playing fields.
The event has been facilitated by Derby-based HUUB Events on behalf of the Brownlee Foundation which has been set up by the Olympic medal winners to provide children across the UK with a positive sporting experience and to encourage regular participation in sport. The Brownlee brothers will be cheering on the young athletes and talking to teachers about the benefits of encouraging the triathlon disciplines of swim, bike and run in schools.
Dean Jackson set up HUUB Events to work alongside his award-winning triathlon kit design company three years ago. The team have since organised a wide range of events including the Jenson Button Trust Triathlon and the Cycle Derby sportives.
He has worked with the Brownlee brothers and a host of other triathletes from across the world to develop triathlon wetsuits and kit that are scientifically designed to enhance sporting performance.
Dean explained: “Alistair and Jonny came to our offices at Park Bikeworks in the Cathedral Quarter earlier this year to talk through some of our latest kit ranges and also to do a hugely popular question and answer session at the Roundhouse for our fellow Marketing Derby bondholders.
“We took the opportunity to show them around the city and they were really keen to work with us to do the triathlon event at Allestree Woodlands School.
“The Brownlee Foundation has held similar events across Yorkshire including their home city of Leeds which are attended by thousands of local children.
“We are looking at a smaller event to launch in Derby with around 1,000 children and the response so far has been extremely positive.“
Having watched the Brownlees in action at the Olympics and the increased television coverage of the Triathlon World Series on television, this event is a fantastic opportunity for youngsters to have a go at the world’s fastest growing sport.
“Who knows – we may have some budding Brownlees ready to blossom right here in Derby!”
The Brownlee Foundation is supplying swim caps, bikes and helmets for all the children who will also receive a t-shirt beforehand as well as a medal and goody bag as they cross the finish line. Entrants only need to bring swimwear, a towel, sports kit and trainers with schools providing their own transport.
Schools need to register with firstname.lastname@example.org with spaces allocated on a first-come first-serve basis.
