Gold for Schoeman and Silver for Learmonth at the Commonwealth Games

We knew the both men's and women's triathlon would be exciting. With the change to sprint distance from Olympic and some countries adjusting their line-up accordingly it was going to change the dynamic of the race drastically.

The Brownlee's were clear favourites with odds on Alistair, but Jonny finished 7th and Alistair 10th place despite getting off to a good start and leading the pack in choppy waters. Alistair was first out of the water at 8:48, closely followed by Tayler Reid (CAN) at 8:49, and then his brother Jonny as well as fellow HUUB athlete Henri Schoeman (RSA) at 8:51.

Henri Schoeman was on fire at the last WTS in Abu Dhabi, smashing the swim, bike and run in tricky conditions showing he is currently in great form, so it was very likely he could podium again at the Gold Coast.

The leaders maintained their gap, and then early on in the run Schoeman took to the front and opened a small gap, followed by Jonny and Marc Austin (SCO), while Alistair gradually fell off the pace along with Tyler Reid and Matthew Hauser (AUS). Henri just wasn't letting go of that top spot and went on to claim victory!

Jess Learmonth simply smashed her way to Silver along with the Gold medalist and standout favourite Flora Duffy (BER). Together, they became the duo that the rest of the field were powerless against despite all their efforts. We previously predicted swim-bike breakaways, putting Jess Learmonth in a strong position having podiumed in her last three WTS events from such breaks.

Jess, being the best swimmer in the sport returned to dry land first, but Flora managed to stay with her in the water only three seconds back along with HUUB athlete Sophie Coldwell. After two of four laps on the bike Flora and Jess were almost one minute ahead and by the end of the bike, they were nearly 75 seconds clear. The Silver medal that Jess won was England's first medal of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Other HUUB athletes racing included, Tom Bishop (ENG), Grant Sheldon (SCO), Matthew Wright (BAR) Wian Sullwald (RSA) and Tyler Butterfield (BER).
